Montgomery School hosts the Energy Fair from 10am-4pm on Saturday 17th, also featuring talks from experts and the launch of Exeter Community Energy with a progress report of the city's first source of community owned solar. There will be four guided tours of the building's eco facilities

BAM built the first Passivhaus school in the UK – and the first zero carbon working school in Europe – for Devon County Council.

The 420-place Montgomery Primary School in Exeter was awarded a £1.2 million government grant to create a building with a zero net energy balance over a year.

BAM visited the Netherlands, where our parent company has built such projects for 16 years, and engaged Passivhaus consultants Warm to do some modelling on the Montgomery project.

We maximised daylight levels in the classrooms using internal glazing, light wells, roof lights and white finishes on internal walls.

Classrooms were positioned to maximise solar gain and 915 sq m of photovoltaic panels were integrated into the roof of the building.

Meticulous attention was paid to how the windows were insulated into the concrete panels, so that warm air would be retained by an EDPM cloak.

In the construction stage, we used off-site pre-fabrication techniques where appropriate, and all the energy required for heating, lighting and power was generated on-site.

We also created a 26-place nursery, a car park, sports surfaces and landscaped gardens, and demolished the old buildings.

Work began on site in August 2010 and was completed in December 2011.

Chris Rea from NPS who led the deisgn of the school will be giving guided tours at 11:30am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm on Saturday 17th May.

The 2pm tour will be followed by organised visits to two other green open homes in St Davids and Exwick. We will be organising a car share so please let us know in advance if you need transport or if you are willing to share your car. Contact info@ecoe.org.uk.
